Certified translations

A certified translation is a judicial translation of an official document. Certified translators have taken an oath in court. This means that only these translators are able to conduct a certified translation where they add their own stamp and signature to the translation.

For a certified translation, the original document, or a copy of it, will be attached to the translation. Our experience shows that our customers often need such a translation at short notice. To save time, with TQTranslations all you need to provide is a scan of the original document. However, rules may vary for certified translations as to what extent a scan/copy of the original is sufficient. We can say with certainty that a scan will always be sufficient in Denmark.

If you need a certified translation into a language other than Danish, we may need more than just the copy and you will therefore be asked to send the original document to us by post

Do you need your translation abroad?

Official documents will only be approved abroad if they have been legalised in the country of origin. In Denmark a legalisation is done in two ways:

  1. If the document is needed in a country that, like Denmark, has signed the apostille convention (Haager Convention 5 October 1961), an apostille is sufficient. See here for a list of apostille countries.
  2. If the document is needed in a country that has not signed the convention, in addition to an apostille, it must also be legalised in the relevant country’s embassy. The embassy will legalise the Foreign Office’s signature.

What is an apostille?

In addition to being certified, a translation can also be supplied with an apostille. An apostille is a stamp where the law confirms that the authorised translator’s signature is approved by the law. In other words, the apostille is an additional confirmation that the translator really is certified and approved by the law.

Where can I get an apostille?

You can get an apostille from the Danish Foreign Office.

See the Foreign Office’s website for more information: http://um.dk/da/rejse-og-ophold/legalisering/apostillestemplet

How much does a certified translation cost?

The price for a certified translation is higher than for a standard translation. This is because a certified translation can only be done by a state-authorised translator. The translator will have completed special training to become state-authorised and the law recognises that all translations done by the relevant translator are correct.

It is hard to give a standard word price for a certified translation, as the price depends on the type of document and how much text needs translating.

Unlike a standard translation, the certified translation will not only be sent to you by e-mail but also by post. This is essential, because the original document, or copy thereof, must be attached to the translation. Sending by normal post also means the delivery time is a little longer than for a standard translation.

Which documents require a certified translation?

If you need your translation for a public authority, you usually need a certified translation. If in doubt whether you need a certified translation, we recommend you contact the authority requiring the translation. They will tell you whether you need a certified translation or not. As the price for a certified translation is higher, we recommend you check the necessity of a certified translation in your situation.

You are of course welcome to contact us, should you have any questions.

  • Driver’s license
  • Excerpts from the Chamber of Commerce
  • Exam certificates
